Challenges & Solutions

When constructing or maintaining a multi-storey or underground car park, the planning engineer must ensure the protection of the reinforced concrete from chloride attack, in addition to sealing and waterproofing all cracks and joints in the concrete. It’s also important to make sure the building remains both bright and user-friendly. On the other hand, the client’s focus is very much on robust and durable solutions, with minimum downtimes in the event of repairs so the facility can be quickly returned to service.

This variety of technical and design requirements demonstrates the high level of bespoke, detailed planning and expertise necessary for multi-storey and underground car parks. Our consultants, with their comprehensive knowledge, proven products and intelligent solutions, can provide considerable assistance in achieving all such objectives.

USING INJECTION TECHNOLOGY TO SEAL CEILING JOINTS

Durable, highly resilient joint sealing

If it is not possible to access the outer surface of a component or if it’s necessary to seal gaps between building components such as ceilings, MC offers a reliable and durable solution in the form of MC-Injekt GL-95 TX hydrostructural resin. Based on acrylate, the soft-elastic compound is long-lasting, compatible with groundwater and resistant to frost/thaw cycles, making it ideal for multi-storey and underground car parks.

SEALING OF FLOOR SLABS WITH FLEXIBLE BANDAGES

Impervious to water intrusion from the rear

These are some of the challenges encountered during the execution of foundations. MC prepared with a wide range of admixtures, such as Muraplast line of multifuncional plasticizers and superplasticizers, Centrament Retard retardants and Murasit hydration inhibitor. To help to overcome difficulties with curing MC also offers a wide range o curing agents of Emcoril line.

Structural strengthening with concrete replacement systems

Repairing reinforced concrete components and restoring their load-bearing capacity

Multi-storey car parks are often subject to heavy chloride exposure in the winter months, with the reinforced concrete damaged so badly over the years that it has to be replaced beyond the rebar. Concrete replacement systems are then necessary to restore the load-bearing capacity of the pillars and columns. Nafufill KM 250 meets all the technical specifications for corrosion protection, bonding and fire protection of the rebar in concrete structures. MC‘s R4-rated concrete replacement mortar is structurally effective, heat and fire resistant and can be used on internal and external components. It can be employed for the re-profiling of spalled and chipped contours, as well as for increasing concrete coverage. It is also approved as an embedding mortar for anodes of cathodic corrosion protection systems.

Structural strengthening with CFRP systems

Restoring the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete components

Components in multi-storey car parks with insufficient, corroded or damaged reinforcement can now be easily and inexpensively upgraded with carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP). Flexural strength is enhanced through the use of slot-moulded or surface-bonded CFRP lamellas, while columns or pillars of low-quality concrete can be completely bandaged with CF sheets to augment their multi-axial strength, increasing their load-bearing capacity to up to twice the original value.

Comprehensive protection of concrete surfaces

Surface protection combined with coloured finishes and graffiti protection

MC-Color is the ideal surface protection system for clients who not only want to permanently protect the material of their multi-storey or underground car park but also want to implement a colour-coding concept for users. In addition to excellent concrete protection properties, the system's wide range of pigments makes it easy to create individual wall designs. The surface protection system is open to water vapour diffusion, inhibits carbonation and protects the concrete against frost and de-icing salt attack. MC-Color Flair vision, for example, has excellent colour stability, extremely low dirt affinity and is easy to clean. Even graffiti contamination can be quickly removed with the MC-Cleaner G system.

Long-term protection for open decks

Floor coating with high wear resistance

For the surface protection of open parking decks, regulations recommend an OS 11 system. By definition, these systems involve coatings for areas subject to traffic with, as a minimum, increased dynamic crack bridging of 0.3 mm. Experience has shown, however, that the first signs of wear and tear can be observed after a short period of service, especially in areas subject to high mechanical stress such as curves, ramps or helixes. The rigid OS 8 system MC-DUR 1252 is therefore better suited and is applicable to almost all areas of the car park. The high wear resistance of this system has not just been proven in trafficability tests but firmly established under practical service conditions. The impermeability of MC-DUR 1252 also ensures durable protection of the reinforced concrete structure against chlorides.

High-performance coating for multi-storey car park floors

Car park floors coated at 2 °C ready for re-use after just 2 days

MC-Floor TopSpeed is the best choice when it comes to quickly repairing multi-storey car park floors and minimising downtime. The system allows you to repair multi-storey car park floors within a few hours and return them to full service after a maximum 48 hour wait. The multi-functional speciality resin system can be used at temperatures between + 2 °C and + 35 °C, even under conditions of elevated substrate moisture and air humidity. It cures quickly and is highly resistant to abrasion, scratching, UV and weathering.

Joint bridging as a permanently quiet solution

Joint profiles for vibration-free and noiseless drive-over

Whether in car parks or in underground garages in residential complexes, continual driving over uneven joints means constant noise and vibration with inevitable detrimental impact on the building fabric. The MC-Floor Connect joint profile provides a permanent and noiseless solution to these issues. The joint profile can be quickly, seamlessly and evenly integrated into the substrate to create a robust system that reliably prevents shock loads and vibration, thus eliminating nuisance noise and reducing structural fatigue.
